- a sentence consists of a subject and a predicate. subject-noun phrase predicate-verb phrase clause-consists of a subject and a verb my brother attends have you seen, mother most of the juniors will be going on a national problem took center stage the occupational safety and health administration found those are the subject and verb so those are the clauses. mother, have you seen and a national problem took center stage, if you notice, these make sense all by themselves so they are independent clauses or for your sake, clause. most of the juniors will be going on, the occupational safety and health administration found, and my brother attends are statements that cannot sand by themselves so they are dependent or for your case subordinate clauses.
