Occupational Safety and Health Administration Logs

Does OSHA regulate NASCAR any kind of way?

Could OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration ) come in and place standards on something like tire design and have certain standards that tire manufacturers would be required to meet?

Public Comments

  1. NO.... OSHA IS FOR BUILDINGS....
  2. Absolutely, to the first question. Possibly, to the second question. OSHA is for occupations. NASCAR is an occupation. OSHA to check out tracks: Federal OSHA inspectors are expected to make the rounds at several NASCAR tracks, in the wake of the investigation of the death of a track safety worker at Daytona during SpeedWeeks. One item of concern to OSHA - the spotters' stands high above the track. OSHA's decision to step into the Daytona case is worrisome in some NASCAR quarters; sports are generally considered immune to such examination.(Winston Salem Journal)(2-23-2004)
  3. no
  4. OSHA has no place in professional sports unless we all want to watch chess on TV. I mean c'mon even in swimming, would OSHA allow a head first entry into 48" deep water?
  5. Good question. You would think that they could and would. But I can't find any indication that they do. "OSHA's mission is to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths by issuing and enforcing rules (called standards) for workplace safety and health." "OSHA federal regulations cover most private sector workplaces." *** To me, that would seem to include NASCAR. I guess they're above everybody's rules, including their own.
  6. OSHA will defintely be responsible for everything outside the track in the offices, shops, and garages. But because there is a "sport" involved, it is usually legistated differently during the competition. It also may be that most of the people involved are independent contractors and not covered by OSHA in most cases. Think of boxing, OSHA would never allow beating other workers, so boxing is covered by different laws for the boxers, but note that ring people and the ref have to wear gloves now. That rule would have been copied from the OSHA laws.
