- I think its stupid, another waste.
- I know in the construction buisness, if not for them the death rate of on the job injury's would be fanominal. Yes they are needed or business's would get out of hand on trying anything at your risk in order to make more money.
- OSHA is a joke. Costs ethical companies money and does little to stop un-ethical ones. I worked in a factory that had one job where you used a huge, industrial radial arm saw with no guards. It was just a miracle that no one lost a finger or more. One of the workers called OSHA. OSHA called the company and set up an appointment to come and "investigate" the machine. Company put guard on for visit. OSHA left, guard left too. Waste of taxpayer money like 90% of the employees & departments in our government.
- everybody saw what happened when Bush put the owners in charge of mine safety
- I know firsthand that the information and regulation OSHA provides is important and saves workers' quality of lives. If there was indeed a complaint from an employee, OSHA should have arrived without prior notice. I'm not sure Gem's story is correct. It's not OSHA's practice to arrive for an inspection with prior notice or an "appointment." It's possible the company scheduled a consultation, which is different than enforcement - or the guard was quickly thrown on once the enforcement officer came into the place. If so, a worker should have "unofficially" pointed this out during an interview if they were so worried about it. It's not only helpful to the worker, it helps businesses. How? In states with the lowest injury rates and the best "OSHA" oversight, the workers compensation insurance rates are lowered. Insurance for businesses is incredibly expensive. For those who say OSHA is a joke, I say it may not be perfect, but it's done a whole lot of good for many workers and is worth it.
