what are osha requirements for confined underground work?

Recently I was (asked?) by my employer to work in a storm drain 13 feet underground with a giant plug holding back a lake. The drain was 400 ft long with no ventilation and we had to use powder cement. Now I feel ill and injured from walking on my knees. The only thing provided were particls masks. Dont really want to be unemployed wth the current economy so what can I do?

  1. As far as the requirements for OSHA, your work environment qualifies as a confined space. Your employer is required to provide a confined space entry plan, training, and the appropriate ventillation and rescue equipment. Your best option is to call your doctor, get examined, and file a workmans compensation claim. You should also recommend your employer implement a confined space program.
