Is there any law or OSHA regulation that states how many hours an employee can work before they get a break?

Is there any law or OSHA regulation that states how many hours an employee can work before they get a break? I live in Ohio, near Dayton b/c i'm wokring for a LARGE corporation that just opened a new store and i have on several occasions worked 7 hours without any form of a break. I am also wondering if there was any regulation/law on how far in advanced a company is bound to post schedules? (and not waiting until the day before to post the comming week). Relevant replies would be much appreciated.

  1. im pretty sure it is 3hrs.
  2. OSHA is national and you are supposed to get a break every 2 hours...I'm not sure about the posting but it should be reasonable....look up "OSHA REGS" on Yahoo or Google................
  3. The law states a 30 minute break for every 8 hours worked. There isn't a law for posting schedules but reasonable time must be given. This can include up to two hours before you're scheduled.
  4. Most states set the laws for that state, herein Mass you get a break at 4 hours { 15 min }
  5. breaks have nothing to do with osha regulations rather breaks are involved with your boss which should have been explained to you when you were hired as far as how many breaks and best time to take those breaks
  6. They can have you work 5 hours before you have to have a break. If you are working 8 hours a day, you are supposed to get a 15 min. break in the a.m. and either 30 min or 1 hr lunch, and a 15 min. break in the p.m. You can work six hours straight without taking a lunch, but you would still get one 15 min. break.
  7. yes and it is the law that the osha sheet to to be hugn on the wall where it is viviable to all emloyess
  8. For Ohio there is no requirement for breaks or scheduling according to federal law (the fair labor standards act) or state law as long as you are over 18. The details are at the link below. I know it sucks, but it's true.
  9. It isn't OSHA it is a federal law. You have to be given a break every 2 or 3 hours. I think it is every 2. In an 8 hour day you should have had 3 breaks.
  10. Federal law and Ohio law does not require that employers provide any rest or meal period. However, federal law does say that if a break is given and it is less than 20 minutes in length, then the employer may not dock time for that break. You can read more about the federal rule at: http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/whd/whdfs22.htm As for the schedule notice... sorry to say that I myself have had problems with that one... nothing like knowing the schedule for the week the day before the week starts! Good luck!
