What are OSHA requirements for employees who are forced to work in subzero temperatues?

My security staff has been ordered to walk foot patrols or use an open golf cart to patrol a college campus in subzero temperatues. They are not permitted to use college vehicles for this purpose. Is this in violation of any OSHA requirements?

  1. Unfortunately, OSHA's website is down right now. But try it later, there should be a section with phone numbers for each particular state. Call up and find out if youre being exposed unlawfully.
  2. According to OSHA law, the employer is required to do a Hazard Assessment, which would include assessing the type of hazard you are exposed to (cold temp) and then providing the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is required i.e. gloves. The Hazard Assessment must be in writing. At www.osha.gov check under PPE or cold temp. There is no law on providing shelter, such as a warm vehicle. I wish you warmth!
