Does OSHA reguire you to wear an approved respirator anytime your disturbing lead?

When working with Lead, does OSHA require you to wear an approved respirator. Or does it depend on how much your disturbing the lead.

  1. i would think not. lead in itself in not dangerous unless ingested, my best guess. it is used in so many day to day items, (coins in your pocket come to mind)
  2. OSHA regulations are confusing. You can read them pertaining to lead here: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/lead/standards.html It sounds like yes, under some circumstances you would be required to a respirator. I do imagine if you are handling it in pure solid form, you wouldn't likely need to though. Read through them though.
  3. It does depend on the exposure. If there is a negative exposure assessment, no respirator is needed.
