Is socialism bad for America?
This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the national aeronautics and space administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US department of agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the food and drug administration. At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the national institute of standards and technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my national highway traffic safety administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the environmental protection agency, using legal tender issed by the federal reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US postal service and drop the kids off at the public school. After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the department of labor and the occupational safety and health administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to ny house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it's valuables thanks to the local police department. I then log on to the internet which was developed by the defense advanced research projects administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right. ___ In case you didn't notice, this isn't my story. I'm not endorsing true socialism. I'm just saying, if you believe that socialism is going to kill us all, you're pretty stupid. ADDED DETAIL: What faux news is describing as socialism is basically government regulation. Stop listening to propaganda. Which in turn would cure you of religion as well

- Yes it is. Deal with it.
- im not too sure of the actual definition and you didnt give it...youre offsubj TIRH
- ... yup tell that to Hitler... Stallin....Husein... any more you'd like me to list?
- you have described a few gov't regulations, but you have not described socialism
- No, I think it would be and is a good thing. Then again I am a socialist. ;)
- Yes, especially since American socialism favors the very rich
- Depends on the type. Russian socialism failed hard because it sunk itself, but the Nordic nations are doing alright I'd say. We have had social programs like medicare, medicaid, and social security for a long time. -Billy
- true dat brotha
- Socialism is an idea with good intentions. Unfortunately, it doesn't always take into account greed and corruption. Every law we try to get passed to try to help people will be twisted by individuals who wish to profit at the expense of others. Also, sadly, there's also the lazy people in the world to contend with who would take advantage of a socialist structure in order not to have to do anything.
- Socialism is fantastic and communism is even better...
- When you do not have any power clean water no food have to wait 6 months for a doctor appointment etc... you can thank socialism for that. Then when you have to get down on the floor and pray 5 times a day, not to the god of your choice but the muslim god... and if you dont .... wap.. off with your head. and yes, that kills some folks.
- I'm sorry but I did not read that... Anyway, to answer your question, socialism is not the right thing for America. I don't believe we are like other socialistic countries and turning us into one would cause serious discretions. I don't think socialism is the answer for America, but nice try.
- Socialism is great for anyone because others have to foot the bill for you. If you're lazy, uneducated, "don't quite feel like it" , then Socialism is the way to go. By the way, how are you going to have your own "cake and eat it too" when you have to give it away to those, who don't have to earn it? Remember; $ runs the economy and the tax payer will always be on the hook for tax money to pay for everything. The poor can't and the wealthy have many tax breaks and loop holes but the average "Joe and Mary" get the bill for it all. I think the biggest, unseen problem for Socialism is, that Governments are handed the authority to intrude into people's business, to force change upon people (all in the name of their "best interests") - a typical "nanny state" is born ... and of course, the Governments do this because they are in control of the $ to run the system with. You really want to shy away from socialism - freedom begins to dissipate. In Canada, the "free" medical coverage does NOT always include the best, possible treatment in all cases. The waiting in line-ups of Emergency wards of hospitals, waiting for an appointment with a cancer specialist is quite a challenge (some times, up to 2 years). Yep; why take care of yourself when "free" hip replacement surgery is available? Fat people are a hugh cost to the medical system in Canada i.e. diabetes, cancers, heart problems, hip repalcements etc. Do you really want to wait for ol' Fatty to take up your space when he or she hasn't even a care about loosing any weight?
- Let us know when you actually start describing socialism.
- As a British woman, maybe I shouldn't intrude on private grief, but I will never cease to be amazed by the US's demonising of what they (those who suffer from this prejudice) call socialism. I rather like living in a society where the notion that we should be responsible each for the other in such matters as health, education, basic resources, etc is taken for granted. That the US population regards healthcare as something to be permitted only to the wealthy, with a little concession for everyone else so long as they're "deserving", just stuns me. To us, it's like living the 19th century all over again. So, I like your piece, which I've seen before but is well worth rereading. Thanks. I'm glad whenever I discover US citizens who seem to get the point.
