How long after brakes start squealing do you have to get them replaced? Here's my dilemma, my brakes just started squealing last week on Tuesday (only the front driver side brake is squealing). I got several quotes from shops and all range from $700-$800 bucks (I need a full brake job). Money I don't have because I have not been able to find employment up until yesterday (June 7). I start working on the 12th, and this job requires driving and is out a distance from my home (3 miles). I have been taking it easy by driving only when I have to and on surface streets and not speeding. What I want to know is with light driving will my brake hold out until I get that almighty first pay check? Also, my owners manual says the noise is a safety feature to let me know to replace the pads soon, but what's that time frame?

Are we making ourselves fragile as a thin glass vase? Studies recently have shown that as a result of our society’s fantasy with cleanliness children are growing up with weak immune systems. This is because their parents have been keeping the environment so sterile that when they do come in contact with disease they have no way to fight it. Keeping this in mind is our safety culture making us weak? What I mean is this, in the past there were no weight restrictions on lifting things (unlike now where at work you are no allowed to lift anymore than 20 kg), there were no air bag systems or ABS in cars, There was no very effective anti-bacterial chemicals, etc. So is our health and safety culture making us as a race (the western world) weaker and more fragile or is it helping us to grow stronger? Federal and state laws regarding safety in a business? Hello, Let me start with a simple explanation of what this question is about. At the place I work, I do not want to give its name or take this to a extreme level, My Co-Workers and I have been having issues. (I know a working life always has issues, but hear me out). Not with each other but with the way things run around there. I will admit a lot is just stuff we can complain about but can not really do anything and most of the time, as much as I do not like it, I would have to agree on them with a lot of stuff (That stuff I do not even bring to there attention because I know it's a waste of both our time). But recently there has been issue that I believe I had to stand my own ground (I don't know how else to say it). I refused to do a task given to me by my higher ups, because it has high increase of risk in safety. Not to me but to others, and I have quite a few Co-Workers in the same department as me saying the exact same thing. My superior then got others from a different department to do the task. Me and others have been writing up for not obeying. Please, I do not know what you might think when you read it so I am leaving a note. I'm trying my best to make it sound not a huge big problem and a really bad business. The task most of you would think is stupid and not a big deal if you knew what it was (but it can be a really really really big deal with a simple mistake creating Huge injury) most people wouldn't notice it unless it was there job. We also have a bunch of people here in a nation of prosperity and vast affluence who don't have to pay attention to these uncomfortable thing if they don't want to. They don't have to, quote, "sacrifice," as such when the Democrats and the media in concert convince them there's no problem. It's something they'd like to hear, and so they believe it. BREAK TRANSCRIPT I just had a conversation with our official call screener today, Bo Snerdley, in his office. He says people on the phones are fit to be tied, particularly at Nancy Pelosi. They're throwing the word "traitor" around all over the place. It leads me to try to explain in a little bit more depth an answer to a question we got from a caller near the end of the last hour. He was beside himself, this former Navy man, and his perception is the American people buy everything the Democrats say, and he doesn't understand it. After they said Reagan was the biggest problem facing the free world, Reagan dispatched the Soviet Union. His point was that there are so many instances where you can look, historically, and find that liberal Democrats are wrong in what they claim, not just in foreign policy, but their whole social safety net program has been a disaster, and why people don't see this, and it's very frustrating thing to him. He wanted to know why I thought that was the case, and I had a minute and a half to give an answer. For a minute and a half, it was a brilliant answer. A better answer than anybody else could utter in a minute and a half. That's because I'm a highly trained broadcast specialist who understands the nature of brevity as the soul of wit. But let me expand on this, because it is a frustrating thing, and I feel it sometimes, too, even in the midst of my optimism. Remember, I have said that during all of this the Democrats are sowing their seeds for a massive landslide defeat. There is history for that, too. There is plenty of history that the American people don't buy what the Democrats sell. The reason so many of you think that most Americans are is because of the Drive-By Media. Now, the Drive-By Media no longer has its monopoly but it's still very powerful and it's a one-note samba. It is pro-Democrat. It is pro-liberal. It is anti-Bush. It is anti-Republican, and it is relentless, and I want to remind you of something else. Everybody knows that the three nightly newscasts on the major three networks are not as large, singularly, as they used to be in terms of audience. Combined, they still reach about 30 million people a night, whereas Cronkite used to do that all by himself. There is a new media, and there's an alternative, and it's growing. It's burgeoning, and it's creating problems for the liberal Democrats, although those problems are not often recounted in their house organs, such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Drive-By television networks, the cable networks. So you're looking for validation that they are weakening, and you don't see it because what you watch on television, 90%, portrays the Democrats as omnipotent and powerful, all over the place, gaining strength, the American people love and support them, and that impression has to be considered somewhat valid, what with the election results of last November. At the same time, I don't think it's as pervasive as it used to be. But let's talk about the people that watch the nightly newscasts for one second. Many of you in this audience are multitaskers and you access a whole lot of different sources of media. You listen to this program, and you go on the Internet. You watch some cable news. You're all over the place. You read various different things. You would be surprised at the number of Americans whose only source of news is the nightly newscasts. Now, they're primarily elderly, upper middle-age and beyond. You can see that by looking at the commercials -- and I don't mean this to sound funny, even though it is. But you're watching a newscast and the commercials are burial plots here and Preparation H over there and heart medicine here and Lipitor over there. When basically 80% of the commercials are medicines to sustain your life for another five years, you know who the audience is, and that's habitual. They have not transformed into the new media. They are out there. These are people, too, that have landline telephones. These are people that have not moved into cell phones and the Internet, and guess who it is that pollsters call? Pollsters have a tough time getting hold of people with cell phones, and they're having a tougher and tougher time getting hold of people that use landline phones. But this crowd that we're talking about does; they still do. This generational shift has not been completed yet, and the people that produce these nightly newscasts are well aware of this, and they're always making efforts here to try to lower their demographics. But they've got a problem, because their newscasts happen at the end of the day when a lot of people already know what they're going to see when they turn on the nightly news. But those who watch it -- and there's 30 million of them every night, averaged, if you combine all three -- it's their first taste of the day, and they believe it. It's hook, line, and sinker. It's the Bible to them, and that's it. So there's a large chunk of it, and then you have, sadly, ladies and gentlemen, a lot of people who are just sponges, and they access the Drive-By Media, and they just believe it. It carries with it this note of authority. You know from your own experience growing up: If you read it in the paper, it was true. It's just like law enforcement never, ever falsely charges people. Law enforcement never screws up. If they say somebody did it, you think they did it. That's just human nature. I'm not even talking politics here. There's certain institutions in this country that have always enjoyed a tremendous amount of credibility and respect and very few people have ever questioned it, and the Drive-By Media is one of those. That's really the root of the question. How in the world can people continue to believe this stuff, not just the media, but how can they believe the Democrats when time and time again everything the Democrats say turns out to be not true? Here's a Navy man calling. "How can it be that people are not outraged over Pelosi? How can it be that they're not outraged over the fact that the Democrats are trying to secure the defeat and un-fund, de-fund the United States Military?" Why are there not massive protests in the street of anger and outrage over this? Well, there are answers to this, and they're traditional. Most of the people that would do those kind of protests don't ever protest. The protesters are the malcontent leftists who make it their job. They go out and they secure rent-a-mobs and they try to create chaos and tumult and this is what the media is doing, and the Democrats, they don't want you happy. They don't want you content, not with a Republican in the White House, and certainly not with a Republican they think is illegitimate, and certainly not when the Republicans run the House and Senate or ran the House and Senate. They don't want you happy. And then you've gotta factor in human nature. Sad to say, it's much easier to be a pessimist than it is to be an optimist. It's much easier to be doom and gloom. It's much easier to think the worst is going to happen than to believe the best will happen, and most people's experiences in their lives are that excrement happens, and good things are rare and they're unique, and that's why they're rare and unique, because they don't happen that much. So you factor all of these things together. You know, why is it is that Nancy Pelosi is not the equivalent of Jane Fonda, for crying out loud? She's trying to undermine her own country for her own self-interests and the interests of her party. I know it's frustrating to watch this stuff and think that most of your fellow citizens are just a bunch of blithering idiot sponges soaking it all up. I don't think it's as bad as you think, but it is a problem. There are a lot of people who are not thinkers. There are a lot of people who are not curious. There are a lot of people who want to be mired in misery or doom and gloom. It's a natural mind-set, and it's fed to them each and every day. But, as I say, if you go back and look at the number of things, historically, the Democrats don't win every election, and everything that you think is going to happen doesn't in regards to their prominence and victory. I'm telling you, I know some of you just think I'm whistling Dixie here, but far more people in this country than you might believe or you might be aware of, are watching what's happening and are just as outraged as you are, and when it comes time for them to express themselves, they will do so, and the Democrats are cruising for a major humiliation again. I don't know how soon. It may not be 2008, it may be 2010 or 2012. I'm talking about electorally, but it is going to happen. They're reconstructing the exact circumstances they created post-Vietnam going into Watergate and that they think led them to the Promised Land. Of course they lost in a 49-state landslide with George McGovern as their nominee. Guess who Democrats are talking to about advising them for their future? They're out there having conferences with George McGovern. They have a perverted sense of their own success. When it's defined and when it happens, or how it's defined and when it has happened, this is something that's just going to take time to play out. The tough thing for those of you who are affected by this, is you never, ever see this even when they do lose. Even when they're shellacked, you don't see humiliation or embarrassment in the Drive-By Media. The minute they lose, they ratchet it up again. "Okay, what are the Democrats going to have to do to win?" There is never credit for Reagan, never credit for Bush, never credit for victorious Republicans. They always slough it off to, "Well, again, the right-wing Christian hayseeds, you know? They came through. Democrats failed to," blah, blah, some other thing. Victory is never legitimate. It's because of some mistake Democrats made, and they start out trying to correct the mistakes and the media helps them out with this. It's a one-note samba for the first time in the Drive-By Media. But it's not as one sided and had as bad in terms of the perception of the majority of the American people as you believe, as you might think. Listen to the number of people who call here asking this question. You are not just lone voices appearing on this program. There are countless others, thousands, hundreds of thousands who are sitting out there and throwing things on the radio going, "Yeah! Yeah! Say it again! Say it louder!" They're just as irritated as you are. They don't have an outlet, and they're not interviewed by the Drive-By Media and so forth. News is a product like any other product that's marketed and packaged and put on the grocery shelves or any other store shelf, for sale. I don't care how lofty they think their position is because it's constitutionally protected. I don't care about any of that. These people put together an agenda. There are people (they're working right now) putting together these newscasts this afternoon and tonight, and don't believe that they're not putting these things together with their own agendas and their own desires and what they think will look good, what they think will get ratings in some cases. But for the first the most part, it's not about objectivity or reporting real news or anything of the sort. Their worldview is what it is, and things that don't fit in their worldview they don't even see. So it's buck-up time. (sigh) I hate to being an I told you so, but I warned everybody back in October, this was the kind of thing you're going to have to put up with if the Republicans lose the election. It's bad enough when they win, the Democrats are relentless -- and the Drive-Bys. But now they won, and, of course, they're puffing their chests out and they're beating their chests like King Kong, Tarzan, Mighty Joe Young, whatever you want, and they're just feeling their oats right now, and it's that pompous arrogance and condescension that's also offensive in the way they go about things. But you gotta have faith, folks. The Democrats have not totally triumphed, and they never will totally triumph. There are too many of you who care too much, who will stop it. One other factor -- and I've mentioned this before, too. Particularly when it comes to the war on terror, war in Iraq, the Drive-Bys have done one hell of a job of convincing enough Americans that there's no threat. In fact, not only is there no threat, there wouldn't be a threat at all if we weren't attacking Muslims, if Bush weren't in the White House. 9/11? Why, it was just a mere episode, and most people don't want to remember it. Most people don't want to be reminded of it. They don't want to think that they're going to be, their whole lives, constantly on a vigil protecting themselves and waiting for the next attack. That's not what being an American is. Being an American is to be insulated from the stuff that happens in the Middle East, insulated from the stuff that happens in the Third World, insulated from the stuff that happens in places like Afghanistan and what's going on in the Philippines now, and in some of Indonesia. That's not what being an American is. Being an American is about having as carefree a life as possible with the normal trials and tribulations, but it does not include getting up every day and worrying to death over whether another couple jets are going to go into another couple buildings and another 3,000 people be incinerated. If anybody comes along and convince the American people they don't have to worry about that, then they'll gladly take the bait -- and, voila! It is happening, and because of our affluence and prosperity, people are able to go live their lives however they choose and pay scant or no attention to this whatsoever, and then, some of these people, after deciding that they don't want to pay any attention to this and that they don't want to live their lives under constant fear, constant threat that this could happen again, they don't want to be vigilant about this, all it takes to add to that is everyday a pummeling of the president and the whole thing about the war on terror and how we're creating circumstances. Now the Iranians are doing what they're doing because of us. They were peace-loving people before we came along! The Iraqis had been better off with Saddam Hussein. So you couple all of that natural mind-set of what it is to be an American or what it has been to be an American, with a desire for that to continue, and then you portray the "threat" to being an American as living in the embodiment of George W. Bush. Well, you can see how some people would buy into that, because everybody wants to blame somebody other than themselves. You might say, "Well, why don't they blame the Democrats?" Because nowhere in the media are the Democrats being blamed, other than here. We're not insignificant. We're not small by any stretch. I'll tell you, Fox News is what it is, but it's a speck compared to the three networks, all the rest of the Drive-Bys and the magazines and the newspapers and so forth and so on. There are reasons for this. There are explanations for it. Solutions? Well, in my case I just rely on the ultimate judgment and decency of a majority of the American people, the vast amount of times, to prevail, and I still believe that.
Used jeep failed safety inspection 3 weeks after purchase. Does dealer have to pay for repairs? SORRY!! This is long but I need to know what to do!! I bought a used jeep Nov 18th in Mass. I live in RI. I have a 30 day warranty with a 100.00 deductible. Dealer didn't have the title, said he would have it in 3 days but didn't get it to me till the 25th. This made me ineligible for the 7 day lemon aid law for a full refund if it fails inspection. The engine light came on the 19th. He had me bring it to his mechanic. They put in new spark plugs, a e vap hose and a purge valve hose(? not sure if that is the right thing) Engine light went off but came back on after 80 or so miles. Found it needed a ignition coil. I had also told him the back windshield wiper didn't work and brake light was out. Sent me back to his mechanic. Agreed to pay for the wiper and break light but not the ignition coil. He said it wasn't part of an inspection. It is and it would have failed without it (his mechanic told him that) I told him I would pay the 100 deductible and he had to pay the rest. He said HE would put a hundred towards it and I had to pay the rest! The mechanic only took a hundred from me. Now, last week, it failed inspection. Emissions is fine but it failed for front breaks and front U joint. Got a quote of 250 to fix. I called him again about that and he basically flipped. I told him I talked to consumer affairs and they said he legally had to fix it.(which I really did, called the MASS number) He needed to talk to his partner and was supposed to call me back and didn't. I called the next day...he said he would do the brakes but that he doesn't think the U joint was part of an inspection and his partner was checking into it. He also said I couldn't go back to the original mechanic he sent me too and that he would get to it in the next "week or two" My 30 day warranty will be up on the 18th. I think he is trying to wait till after that to tell me that he didn't have to pay for it. I understand the 7 day Lemon Aid Law but I'm confused about the whole failing inspection thing. Doesn't he LEGALLY have to pay for the repairs because it failed inspection, even if it is after the 7 days?? There is no way the brake pads went down to nothing and the U joint rotted in 3 weeks so those defects were there when I bought it. By the way....he wanted me to bring it to a inspection station where it would have passed when we were arguing about the ignition coil. So this guy is a real jerk. Have I received the correct CORGI certificate for the installation of my new gas boiler? I had a new boiler installed recently as part of bathroom refurb works. After chasing, the builder arranged for am engineer to issue a Gas Safety Certificate. I was under the impression I needed something from CORGI as it is a new installation. Do I have the correct certificate? If not, I will not pay the builder the final retention until they provide me with the right one as this was written into the specification they quoted against.

How to fight for liberty, freedom, and the constitution? I am really disgusted with the world around me these days. Corporations and private interests groups are running the government and using it to promote greed, materialism, and rape our planet. The government is slowly taking away our freedoms, liberties, and trampling on the constitution often under the guise of public safety. (As one of my favorite quotes (sorry if its off a bit) "If we trade freedom for safety you end up losing both"). For all intents and purposes they're spitting in the faces of the founding fathers. The saddest part of it all is the american public buys into the materialism as whats important in life and is complacent to it all as long as they have they're plasma screens pools and two car garages. The poor numb themselves with drugs and alcohol. It seems like we're staring down a dark and dreary path in front of us. What I'm wondering is what can I do about it? How can I become active and actually strive to make a difference. And the real question is it even possible to make a difference? Do enough people even care? If I try to make a difference will it just be like tossing little pebbles at a large bkrick wall? When giving me advice on what I can do just keep in mind I work 40 hours a week and live paycheck forever so I don't have sums of money and time I can put into it. I am resigned to a life of emotional agony.....How can I accept it better? None of the traditional psychotherapy methods have worked for me (i have anxiety and depression 24/7 or maybe 20/7). Things like "think positive" - or "find some friends" - "volunteer" - "think of those less fortunate than you" - "find meaning in life" (uh, there appears to be no intrinsic meaning)..... The definition of insanity is trying the same thing twice and expecting a different result. So I'm going to NOT attempt the above solutions again.....because THEY DON'T WORK! The only thing that may work is some form of acceptance or mindfulness. However, to give you a little background info, I'm in a bit of an existential crisis right now.....I feel like life has NO meaning (accept whatever BS you put into it) - we're no more significant than cockroaches on a macro scale. There is NO safety, NO security in this world. It is mainly who you know, how lucky you are, how smart you are (survival of the fittest). Given this grim perspective that i just shared, how can I accept the depression I feel on a daily basis? How can I cope with it better? I don't think I should be paying full rent for this house... what should I do? I'm renting a house in Vancouver B.C. I have ALWAYS payed my rent on time.... never been an issue. Until... our power stopped working in our house. We payed our Landlord half of the rent simply because we have no power ANYWHERE, we pay for our cable and internet and have been unable to use it due to the no power. We also have over 200$ in food gone to complete waste, again because our fridge doesn't work. Also our stoves and even our water doesn't turn hot.... so my fiance and I have had to go to our local community centre to use the showers there.... this is absolutely humiliating!!! We pay 1000$ a month for rent in a house and can't even live in it. Our Landlord is demanding we pay the full rent... but this is absurd!!! We have had 3 weeks and no power... how is this considered habitable? The Landlord does not own the house, he simply re-rents it. The owner of the house refuses to fix the hydro saying it is the Landlords job, but this is an internal problem with the electrical and needs to be looked at by the owner... simple as that! Our Landlord is saying he wants the other 500$ rent even though we can't live in our own house.... we think the first $500 was GENEROUS... we should have had to pay NOTHING! How much should I pay for break pads replacement and how do I know they really need replaced? (N. Virginia)? My car was rejected on my Virginia Safety Inspection. The mechanic led me to believe that the break pads were worn down and he wrote on the sticker "front breaks". However, he acted as if he didn't want to talk to me about, as if he was lying. Nonetheless, Virginia's got you because you need to pass that inspection so I need to have the pads replaced. All my quotes are around $175. Is a fair price? Also, my breaks work great! I have noticed no problems whatsoever does this not matter or should this be an indicator that they are scamming me? can i sue my landlord? (uk answers only!)? about 8 months ago i decided i needed a load of work doing on my rented flat (owned by a company that runs the funeral parlour in the same building): there are 2 massive patches of damp, a wall fallen down outside, all the wooden sash windows are 35 years old and rotten to the core, as is the front door, the shower didnt work, and the boiler housing is made from asbestos. i rang the letting agency 4 or 5 times about these problems, they sent a couple of people to make quotes but after 5 months nothing had happened. then a guy came round to do the annual gas inspection and condemned the gas fire because it was pumping out carbon monoxide. the gas fire was the only form of heating in the flat (no central heating and 2 storage heaters that had been disconnected) so this was kind of the final straw. i emailed them telling them i was not paying rent to them (without possibility of back payment) until i had dates for the work to start. that was on the 1st of march, so it has been 3 and a half months since they have received any money from me. since i stopped payments i keep ringing the letting agents, who seemed largely unconcerned, and after all this time all they have managed to do is install a new fire (which i gathered from their contractor they already planned to do) and they have only just fixed the faulty shower today. each time they send someone round, even to look at the place, a letter comes the following day asking me to pay all the rent in arrears and threatening me with court action. i keep emailing them and calling them saying i wont pay any rent until the work is done, and im not paying the arrears at all. ive spoken to various people who have looked at my contract and say that im within my rights to do this, as they are in breach by not taking care of the place. i was thinking of paying them the arrears anyway, and getting a health and safety inspector round to condemn the place. would this allow me to sue them for lots of money? is it worth doing? im not bothered about legal action if its gonna get me less than a couple of grand...what should i do? oh, and it needs sorting out soon because even the weakest pipsqueak could kick down my rotten front door while im out and rob me! by the way i signed a 12 month contract so im still under contract till the end of june. and i dont want to stay, my mate can put me up for cheap so i just want out!!!

As I did so this morning, the driver handed me a little pamphlet of paper that read "Thanks for your excellent service" on the front. My first thought was that Metro was somehow going off the deep end, thanking me for paying them. It made no sense. Then I opened the pamphlet. Really upset crying...is it me? My first semester @ college I lived with a friend of mine. 2 days after we moved in she transferred to a diff. university. Then they put me with a religious girl who had 4 roommates before me. I got freaked out by her being OVER THE TOP religious i.e. posting bible quotes all over the walls not allowing me to listen to rap etc. I moved out to a different dorm. I lived with a girl who I really liked. Prob. was we had no AC in the room I kept dehydrating ended up in the hospital twice. Moved out again to my own room for the rest of my first semester. Second semester I made friends with a girl who "used me" to move into a building with her friends. The girl and I got into a HUGE fight and I got kicked out of the building. Moved to another room for the rest of my second semester and things were fine. Sophomore year - moved to "semi-apartment" style dorm 2 bedrooms 1 living room. Auto Insurance & Road Service Question? Hi there, Thank you in advance for helping out! I want to know your advice and recommendation on which company to receive my auto insurance/road service from, and what sort of coverage is recommended. I have been with AAA my whole life because my father advocates highly for them so I have trusted his judgment and experience. But I think they may be ripping me off. I am a 27 year old single female with a good driving record (last accident was back in spring 2005 I believe). Yet, every single year they seem to increase my monthly payment by ~$10 and now I'm paying $118.25/month! Are they that superior a company that it is worth paying this and should I try to negotiate with them, or is it worth looking into some other companies such as Geico, State Farm, Progressive, etc. I’ve been receiving invites from them for years and Liberty Mutual supposedly has some college alumni offer for me and claim to be ~$340 cheaper than 21st Century, Allstate, and Mercury…but I never trust ads anymore. The first was said by Winston Churchill, then home secretary, calling for parliament to respond to the need for prison reforms. Crucially, he urged that we never give up hope on the capacity of the human heart to change. The second comes from a white paper published by another Conservative home secretary, David Waddington, in 1990 under Margaret Thatcher. The prison population fell under those Tories, from over 50,000 to 40,000. The subsequent Criminal Justice Act of 1991 ordered sentencers to use prison as "a last resort", and to give reasons why it was necessary for "serious offences". But that required judges, magistrates, and ministers to face up to the primordial British love of punishment - so vividly expressed daily in our tabloids. I am a manager for a restaurant chain- my store is very old and every time I attempt to get things fixed, it gets refused funding due to head office budget limitations. Over the past year, our air ventilation system has not been working and it is unbearable at work. I have called about this several times, an engineer is sent to my store, agrees the system isnt working, then puts in a quote for repairs which is ultimately refused. Things have got worse over the last few weeks as myself and many of my staff have been feeling dizzy, sick and have had headaches. I called an engineer out after almost fainting at the weekend who said one of my large fridges is leaking gas. I have since found out that the gas used inside this fridge is practically illegal since 2001 and should have been replaced or the unit condemned ages ago. insurance company ignoring my letters of demand now what (long back story)? On March 2, I was parked across the street from my boyfriend's house, his neighbour was washing her car and seen me pull up she even asked my boyfriend and I if we knew who owned a dog that she'd seen running around. We went inside, a few hours later we came out to find the side of my car completely wrecked like I'd been sideswiped, the neighbour wasn't home when we called the police for hit and run so they came back the next day to speak to her and found my paint on her back bumper. She verbally agreed to the police to pay to repair my vehicle if she wasn't arrested and charged, she told the police she didn't know my car was there and thought she hit a pole (there are no poles anywhere!) so clearly that was a lie! My boyfriend was asked by the police to verify my details (I live in a different state) and provide his neighbour with my phone number which he did so, the police told her to call me the next day and provide her insurance details. I came back from my holiday the following week and called her as she never called when she promised the police she would, she told me couldn't call me as she had been supplied her own number clearly another lie as her number and mine are nothing alike! But it certainly oozes contempt for the general public. I can't help wondering if the laughter we hear in the audio isn't rather nervous. I remember the derision and contempt displayed by GWB (it's "amusing") and Harper (it's "sad") at the huge outcry prior to and during the Montebello SPP summit, and I strongly suspect that's an agreed-upon response amongst those who know they are telling us lies. The CFR assemblage was attempting to find ways to counter the anti-vaccine movement. The first male speaker in the above video thinks that people need to be told: "There's less mercury in a flu shot than there is in a tuna sandwich." (In the transcript he's listed as Tom Wilson from Cornell Medical School.) Talk about "sad"! When a medical professional resorts to quoting a journalist to prove the safety of vaccines we're in deep trouble. Does anybody know aboout the new law for Volvo 850 ABS and TRAC lights? The state of NH came out with a new law this year requiring the ABS and TRAC dashboard lights to be off. I had the inspection done at an independent mechanic. The car passes inpection except for the ABS and TRAC lights. I went to Volvo and they didn't even know about the new law yet. However, they looked it up and found it in the new book. They quoted $720 for a new computer module and labor. My question is, how can I get around this? Even they said it was a silly law and that the brakes work irregardless. I wouldn't sacrifice safety, but I've been driving under this condition for years. Any ideas? Thanks.
Wayward Patterdale Terrier I have two Patterdale terriers, one is 11 and the other is 12months. We moved to a very rural area last summer, having previously always lived in busy towns. The 11 yr old is a well trained and balanced dog, I have never had any major problems with her. Despite being a working/hunting breed she has never worked/hunted because of our town living, until now! When we first moved here she started on rodents, which was fine, and kinda helpful. Then she moved on to Coypu, a beaver type animal that is considered vermin here. We have several acres of fenced land, and she only hunted on our land. However, since Spring, she has taken to roaming further and further, sometimes up to 3 miles, hunting Coypu. As our community is small and mostly Farmers, she is known, and even respected for the job she does by getting rid of these creatures for local farms, they always call us if they see her on their land, and she always returns home come dinner time, I trust her to look after herself, even though I would rather she did not roam around doing this, I also worry that when inside these earths/dens the earth could collapse on her, and we would never find her, because she is out alone, and unsupervised. The big problem is, she takes the younger dog with her, he is bigger, fitter and stronger than her, but clearly too young and not as smart and comes back with very nasty injuries, to the point I am very concerned for his safety. We have had to resort to keeping the older dog on a long tie in front of the house, because nothing else we do stops her running away after Coypu. As I previously said, our land is well fenced, but she digs under the fencing, and despite our best efforts to seal the weak areas in the fence she has created, she always finds a way out, and sneaks off in the blink of an eye with the younger dog following. We cannot afford to get fencing buried underground, 7 acres of that kind of fencing would cost more than a brand new car (we got quotes) and we just can't afford that. I really hate to tie her up, I still take her for walks, so I am not concerned about her getting excercise, but I feel bad that she is not able to enjoy our land because she can't be trusted to respect her boundaries. Has anyone ever had this problem, is it possible to train a dog not to roam like this or is the instinct to hunt too strong?
Is Selling Anything Containing Mould Illegal? Even if the item is not to be eaten, especially if you do not tell the customer it has mould in it? An example is selling an item in a cardboard box, where the box contains mould, or selling the box itself. I see the obvious hazards of this, as a person may put clothing, toys, or food in the box, which may make them infected by the mould which can be a threat to health and safety. Or even having the box in the same room as a person may cause lung irritation and such. Also, the employees should not have to handle any items containing mould without precautions. This actually happened - I heard of it from someone I know who works in a store that sold cardboard items containing mould. **Are there rules against this in Canada/Ontario? If so, which rules, and can you give me quotes or references?** *Regarding both the employees safety for handling such items, their ability to refuse handling such items, and the legality of such sales without telling the customer the box contains mould. Tradesman Scam? My mother recently got a quote to get her roof fixed, the tradesman gave her a sheet with a header of "quotation/tax invoice" which to me are two totally different things. Anyway he convinced mum to sign the quote... Mum later rang the man to inform him that she wouldnt be using him to do the job. Today he calls my mother to say that himself and 2 of his workers have started working for an hour and my mum being scared said she would pay him for the hours work. I just got home (9 30pm) and fearing for my mums safety called this man, to which he said "no worries" about not going ahead with the job but said my mum agreed to pay him for his work. Im not convinced there is any work even done, i said i would call him back regarding this matter, but the fact he has come on our property and 'done work' without a go ahead to me is trespassing. Any advice would be great before i goto the police.

Why are insurance quotes for the Ninja 250 so high? I have been doing a lot of research to make sure I can afford a motorcycle and I have been very surprised with the cost of insurance. It seems to me that the safety and security of everyone, for the "public good", would be better served if everyone is identifiable in public. How Should Deal With Stress and Anxiety ? Stress is life. Stress is anything that causes mental, physical, or spiritual tension. There is no running away from it. All that matters is how you deal with it. This article does not deal with the factors of stress, anxiety, and depression, nor is it a clinical advice. If you feel depressed, you are not alone. It has been estimated that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians in America are for stress-related problems. This is why it is wise to consult a doctor if you are having physical symptoms of stress. However, here are some tips that can help from a spiritual perspective. Torture. Beatings. Loss of property. The death of loved ones. These were just some of the enormous challenges the Muslims of Makkah faced in the seventh century following their acceptance of Islam in fiercely tribal and polytheistic Makkah. Detention. Harassment. Beatings. Discrimination. Loss of Job. Profiling. Hate Crimes. Constant media attention. Surveillance. These are just some of the challenges Muslims in America today face, post-9/11. Like our predecessors in Makkah, we have begun to face great stress, anxiety, and pressure, more than ever in our recent history on this continent, although Muslims who were brought here as slaves faced worse than what we can even imagine. 1. Ask Him. He Listens: DU`A Turn each anxiety, each fear and each concern into a Dua (supplication). Look at it as another reason to submit to God and be in Sajdah (prostration), during which you are closest to Allah. God listens and already knows what is in your heart, but He wants you to ask Him for what you want. The Prophet said: Allah is angry with those who do not ask Him for anything (Tirmidhi). The Prophet once said that in prayer, he would find rest and relief (Nasai). He would also regularly ask for God's forgiveness and remain in prostration during prayer praising God (Tasbeeh) and asking for His forgiveness (Bukhari). Allah wants you to be specific. The Prophet advised us to ask Allah for exactly what we want instead of making vague Duas. Dua is the essence of worship (the Prophet as quoted in Tirmidhi). "Call on your Lord with humility and in private: for Allah loveth not those who trespass beyond bounds. Do not make mischief on the earth, after it hath been set in order, but call on Him with fear. And longing (in your hearts): for the mercy of Allah is (always) near to those who do good" (Quran 7:55-56). 2. Tie your Camel: DO YOUR PART One day Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin, "Why don't you tie down your camel?" The Bedouin answered, "I put my trust in Allah." The Prophet then said, "Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah" (Tirmidhi). Muslims must never become fatalistic. Although we know only Allah is in control and that He has decreed all things, we are each responsible for making the right choices and doing the right thing in all situations of our lives. We must take action (link to planning articles on SV). We must work to alleviate the hardships we, our families and our communities face. Ask yourself the following questions if you are worried about the state of the world: are you part of the peace movement? Is your Masjid part of the peace movement? Are you part of an interfaith group with an agenda of peace and justice? Are you working with a group fighting discrimination? If your answer is no, it is time that you sat down to plan your share of time and money in finding solutions to the problems you face. "Verily Allah does not change men's condition unless they change their inner selves" (Quran 13: 11). Turn each worry into a Du`a and each Du`a into an action plan. That will show your commitment to your request and will focus your energy in the right direction. 3. Remember that human responsibility is limited While we need to carry out our duty to the best of our abilities, always remember that you don't control the outcome of events. Even the Prophets did not control the outcome of their efforts. Some were successful, others were not. Once you have done your duty, leave the results to Allah. Regardless of the results of your efforts, you will be rewarded for the part you have played. However, never underestimate your abilities. Understand the concept of Barakah (blessings from Allah) and remember that Allah can and Insha Allah will expand them if you are sincerely exerting your energies for the right path. 4. Leave the world behind you FIVE TIMES A DAY Use the five daily prayers as a means to become more Hereafter-oriented and less attached to this temporary world. Start distancing yourself as soon as you hear Adhan, the call to prayer. When you perform Wudu, keep repeating Shahada, the declaration of faith, as water drops slip down your face, hands, arms, and hair. When you stand ready to pray, mentally prepare yourself to leave this world and all of its worries and stresses behind you. Of course, Shaytan will try to distract you during prayer. But whenever this happens, go back and remember Allah. The more you return, the more Allah will reward you for it. Also, make sure your Sajdas (prostrations) are talking Sajdas, in which you are really connecting to God and seeking His Mercy, praising Him, and asking His forgiveness. (link to Sajda article...ramadan page) 5. Seek help through SABR Seek help through Sabr and Salat (Quran 2:45). This instruction from Allah provides us with two critical tools that can ease our worries and pain. Patience and prayer are two oft-neglected stressbusters. Sabr is often translated as patience but it is not just that. It includes self-control, perseverance, endurance, and a focused struggle to achieve one's goal. Unlike patience, which implies resignation, the concept of Sabr includes a duty to remain steadfast to achieve your goals despite all odds. Being patient gives us control in situations where we feel we have little or no control. 'We cannot control what happens to us but we can control our reaction to our circumstances' is the mantra of many modern-day self-help books. Patience helps us keep our mind and attitude towards our difficulties in check. 6. Excuse Me! You are Not Running the World, HE is. It is important to remind ourselves that we don't control all the variables in the world. God does. He is the Wise, the All-Knowing. Sometimes our limited human faculties are not able to comprehend His wisdom behind what happens to us and to others, but knowing that He is in control and that as human beings we submit to His Will, enriches our humanity and enhances our obedience (Uboodiah in Arabic) towards him. Read the story of the encounter of Moses with the mysteries behind God's decision (Quran: 18:60-82). Familiarize yourself with God's 99 Names, which are also known as His Attributes. It is a powerful way of knowing Him. "God-there is no deity save Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent Fount of All being. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth. Who is there that could intercede with Him, unless it be by His leave? He knows all that lies open before men and all that is hidden from them, whereas they cannot attain to aught of His knowledge save that which He wills them to attain. His eternal power overspreads the heavens and the earth, and their upholding wearies Him not. And He alone is truly exalted, tremendous." (Quran 2:255). The Prophet recommended reading this verse, known as Ayat al kursi, after each prayer, Allah's peace and blessings be upon him. Once Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, approached the Prophet during a difficult time and he found the Prophet in Sajda, where he kept repeating "Ya Hayy Ya Qayyum", words which are part of this verse. 7. Birds Don't Carry their Food Allah is al Razzaq (the Provider). "How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah Who feeds them and you, for He hears and knows all things (Quran 29:60)." By reminding yourself that He is the Provider, you will remember that getting a job or providing for your family in these economically and politically challenging times, when Muslims are often the last to be hired and the first to be fired, is in God's Hands, not yours. As Allah says in the Quran: "And He provides for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And if anyone puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish His purpose. Verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion (Quran 65:3). 8. God controls Life and Death If you fear for your physical safety and security, remember that only Allah gives life and takes it back and, that He has appointed the time for it. No one can harm you except if Allah wills. As He says in the Quran: "Wherever you are, death will find you out, even if you are in towers built up strong and high!" (Quran 4:78). 9. Remember that life is short It's easy to get caught up in our own stress and anxiety. However, if we remember that our life is short and temporary, and that the everlasting life is in the Hereafter, this will put our worries in perspective. This belief in the transitory nature of the life of this world reminds us that whatever difficulties, trials, anxieties, and grief we suffer in this world are, Insha Allah, something we will only experience for a short period of time. And more importantly, if we handle these tests with patience, Allah will reward us for it. 10. Do Zikr, Allah, Allah! "... without doubt in the remembrance (Zikr) of Allah do hearts find tranquility" (Quran 13:28). If you commute, use your time in Zikr. Pick any Tasbeeh and do that instead of listening to the radio or reading the newspaper. Maybe you can divide it up between Zikr and planning. Personally, I recite the Tasbeeh of "Subhana Allahe wa be hamdihi, subhan Allahil Azeem" 100 times as I drive. The Prophet taught us these two short phrases which are easy to say but will weigh heavy on our scale of good deeds in the Hereafter. When your heart feels heavy with stress or grief, remember Allah and surround yourself with His Zikr. Zikr refers to all forms of the remembrance of Allah, including Salat, Tasbeeh, Tahmeed, Tahleel, making supplication (Dua), and reading Quran. "And your Lord says: 'Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer)..." (Quran 40:60) By remembering Allah in the way He has taught us to, we are more likely to gain acceptance of our prayers and His Mercy in times of difficulty. We are communicating with the only One Who not only Hears and Knows all, but Who can change our situation and give us the patience to deal with our difficulties. "Remember Me, and I shall remember you; be grateful to Me, and deny Me not" (Quran 2:152). 11. Relying on Allah: Tawakkul When you awaken in the morning, thank Allah for giving you life after that short death called sleep. When you step out of your home, say 'in Your Name Allah, I put my trust in Allah, and there is no power or force except with Allah' (Bismillahi Tawakal to al Allah wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah). At night, remember Allah, with His praises on your lips. Once you have established a plan you intend to follow through on to deal with a specific issue or problem in your life, put your trust in the most Wise and the All-Knowing. "When you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah" (Quran 3: 159). Rely on Allah by constantly remembering Him throughout your day. When you lay down to sleep, remember that sleep is death. That is why one of the recommended supplications before going to sleep is "with Your (Allah's) Name I die and become alive". 12. Connect with other human beings You are not alone. Muslims are not alone. We are not suffering in silence. There are millions of good people who are not Muslim with beautiful hearts and minds. These are people who have supported us, individually and collectively, post-9/11, by checking up on us and making sure we are safe. These are individuals and organizations who have spoken up in defense of Muslims as we endured harassment and discrimination. We must think of them, talk to them, connect with them, and pray for them. Through our connections, we will break the chain of isolation that leads to depression and anxiety. 13. Compare your dining table with that of those who don't have as much as you do The Prophet said: Whenever you see someone better than you in wealth, face or figure, you should look at someone who is inferior to you in these respects (so that you may thank Allah for His blessings) (Bukhari, Muslim). Next time you sit down to eat, eye the table carefully. Check out the selection of food, the quality, the taste, the quantity, and then think of the millions of others who don't have even half as much. The Prophet's Hadith reminds us of this so that we can appreciate and thank God for all that we have. Also remember that the Prophet only encouraged us to compare ourselves to others in two respects: in our Islamic knowledge and level of belief in God (Deen). In these two areas, we should compare ourselves with those who have more than what we do. 14. Say it Loud: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar: Takbirat & Adhan Find a corner of a lake, go out in the wilderness, or even stand on your lawn at your home and call the Adhan with your heart. While driving, instead of listening to the same news over and over again, say Allahu Akbar as loudly as you can or as softly as you want, based on your mood. Year ago, I remember calling Adhan on a Lake Michigan shore in Chicago after sunset as the water gushed against my knees. I was calling it for myself. There was no one else accept the waves after waves of water with their symphony. It was relaxing and meaningful. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. 15. Pray in congregation (Jamat) Pray with other people instead of alone. If you can't pray all five prayers in congregation, at least find one or two prayers you can pray with others. If you are away, establish Jamat in your own family. During the Prophet's time, even though the Muslims endured great persecution, including physical beatings, they would sometimes meet on the side of a mountain or valley and tried to pray together. This is a great morale booster. 16. How is your Imam's Dua? Does the Imam at your local mosque make Dua silently or out loud? Ask him to supplicate with the whole congregation. Suggest Duas for him to make. Ask him to make Dua for other people. 17. Work for the Unity of Muslims Bringing Muslims together will not only help the Muslims, but it will also encourage you to focus your energies on something constructive versus zeroing in on and consistently fretting about difficulties you are going through. Invite Muslims from other ethnic groups to your functions. Visit Masjids other than yours in your city. When you meet a Muslim leader, after thanking him for his efforts, ask him what he is doing for Muslim unity. Ask Imams to make Dua for this. These are just small ways you can help yourself and the Muslim community. 18. Sleep the way the Prophet slept End your day on a positive note. Make Wudu, then think of your day. Thank Allah for all the good things you accomplished, like Zikr and Salat. Ask yourself what you did today to bring humanity together and what you did to help Muslims become servants of humanity. For everything positive, say Alhamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah). For everything negative say Astaghfirullah wa atoobo ilayk (I seek Allah's forgiveness and I turn to You [Allah]). Recite the last two chapters of the Quran, thinking and praying as you turn on your right side with your hand below your right cheek, the way the Prophet used to sleep. Then close your day with the name of Allah on your tongue. Insha Allah, you will have a good, restful night. 19. Begin the Day on a Positive Note Get up early. Get up thanking God that He has given you another day. Alhamdu lillahil lazi ahyana bada ma amatana, wa ilaihin Nushoor (Praise be to Allah Who gave us life after death and unto Him will be the return). Invest in an audio tape driven alarm clock so you can get up to the melody of the Quran. Or Let Dawud Wharnsby's joyful notes put you in a good mood. Sing along if you like. Develop your to do list for the day if you didn't do it the night before. Begin with the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing in the heavens or the earth can hurt you. He is the Highest and the Greatest. (Bismillahillazi la yazurru maa ismihi shaiun fil arze wa la fis samae, wahuwal Alee ul Azeem).The Prophet used to say this after every Fajr and Maghrib prayers. 20. Avoid Media Overexposure: Switch from News to Books Don't spend too much time checking out the news on the radio, television or internet. Spend more time reading good books and journals. When you listen to the persistent barrage of bad news, especially relating to Muslims nowadays, you feel not only depressed, but powerless. Cut down media time to reduce your stress and anxiety. It's important to know what's going on but not to an extent that it ruins your day or your mood. (similarly, when you are in a sad mood, refrain from wallowing and listening to sad songs) 21. Pray for Others to Heal Yourself. The Prophet was always concerned about other people, Muslims and non-Muslims, and would regularly pray for them. Praying for others connects you with them and helps you understand their suffering. This in itself has a healing component to it. The Prophet has said that praying for someone who is not present increases love. 22. Make the Quran your Partner Reading and listening to the Quran will help refresh our hearts and our minds. Recite it out loud or in a low voice. Listen to it in the car. When you are praying Nafl or extra prayers, pick it up and use it to recite portions of the Quran you are not as familiar with. Connecting to the Quran means connecting to God. Let it be a means to heal your heart of stress and worries. Invest in different recordings of the Quran and their translations. "O humanity! There has come to you a direction from your Lord and a cure for all [the ills] in men's hearts - and for those who believe, a Guidance and a Mercy" (Quran 10:57). 23. Be thankful to Allah "If you are grateful, I will give you more" (Quran 14:7). Counting our blessings helps us not only be grateful for what we have, but it also reminds us that we are so much better off than millions of others, whether that is in terms of our health, family, financial situation, or other aspects of our life. And being grateful for all we have helps us maintain a positive attitude in the face of worries and challenges we are facing almost daily. 24. Ideals: ONE STEP AT A TIME Ideals are wonderful things to pursue. But do that gradually. Think, prioritize, plan, and move forward. One step at a time. 25. EFFORTS not Results Count in the Eyes of Allah Our success depends on our sincere efforts to the best of our abilities. It is the mercy of Allah that He does not demand results, Alhamdu lillah. Therefore, the immediate need is a swift and driving increase in our armament production. Leaders of industry and labor have responded to our summons. Goals of speed have been set. In some cases these goals are being reached ahead of time; in some cases we are on schedule; in other cases there are slight but not serious delays; and in some cases--and I am sorry to say very important cases--we are all concerned by the slowness of the accomplishment of our plans. The Army and Navy, however, have made substantial progress during the past year. Actual experience is improving and speeding up our methods of production with every passing day. And today's best is not good enough for tomorrow. I am not satisfied with the progress thus far made. The men in charge of the program represent the best in training, in ability, and in patriotism. They are not satisfied with the progress thus far made. None of us will be satisfied until the job is done. No matter whether the original goal was set too high or too low, our objective is quicker and better results. To give you two illustrations: We are behind schedule in turning out finished airplanes; we are working day and night to solve the innumerable problems and to catch up. We are ahead of schedule in building warships but we are working to get even further ahead of that schedule. To change a whole nation from a basis of peacetime production of implements of peace to a basis of wartime production of implements of war is no small task. And the greatest difficulty comes at the beginning of the program, when new tools, new plant facilities, new assembly lines, and new ship ways must first be constructed before the actual materiel begins to flow steadily and speedily from them. The Congress, of course, must rightly keep itself informed at all times of the progress of the program. However, there is certain information, as the Congress itself will readily recognize, which, in the interests of our own security and those of the nations that we are supporting, must of needs be kept in confidence. New circumstances are constantly begetting new needs for our safety. I shall ask this Congress for greatly increased new appropriations and authorizations to carry on what we have begun. I do not recommend that we make them a loan of dollars with which to pay for these weapons--a loan to be repaid in dollars. I recommend that we make it possible for those nations to continue to obtain war materials in the United States, fitting their orders into our own program. Nearly all their materiel would, if the time ever came, be useful for our own defense. Taking counsel of expert military and naval authorities, considering what is best for our own security, we are free to decide how much should be kept here and how much should be sent abroad to our friends who by their determined and heroic resistance are giving us time in which to make ready our own defense. For what we send abroad, we shall be repaid within a reasonable time following the close of hostilities, in similar materials, or, at our option, in other goods of many kinds, which they can produce and which we need. Let us say to the democracies: "We Americans are vitally concerned in your defense of freedom. We are putting forth our energies, our resources and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a free world. We shall send you, in ever-increasing numbers, ships, planes, tanks, guns. This is our purpose and our pledge." Should people change the locks if they buy a new home? We have just brought a new house recently and I took it for granted that we would get new locks put on the front and back doors so I got a few quotes. Now my husband tells me we are not getting it done because it is unnecessary. He says we should trust the previous owner that nobody else has keys or could access the property (and all our stuff!) while we are out. My husband accused me tonight of having an obsessive compulsive disorder because I am security/safety conscious and would prefer to know ONLY we have the keys. Women supporting men and protecting men? There was a 1980's quote in a National Orginization for women (NOW) educational report which stated it would be very nice for a man to quit a job he doesn't like, rest at home for a while, go back to college and/or change careers. He would find a career that is not about money but is more emotionally fulfilling. In the meantime his wife would provide financial support/protection to pay for any career changes or education as well as emotional support along every step of the way. The wife become his psychological and financial safety net as it was phrased. The wife would always work a reasonable number of hours and would encourage the man to work as FEW HOURS AS NEEDED so he can be more involved with the family since studies show the key to happiness is having a balanced combination of family life as well as well as sucess in careers. Also considered by feminists who hold the same view is the viewpoint that men are equally emotional and should be allowed to show an EQUAL amount of emotional vulnerability without being labeled as wimps and be able to show some amount of anger and not be labeled as abusive. There was also a sentiment that the walls men built meant men required MORE empathy and compassion than women. I dont think women love men enough to do this. Help oil refineries put danger in check When you think “oil refinery” you think “big factory that pollutes the air, and makes the road smell.” Right? Well, chew on this, have you ever thought about the people in those plantations? How about the work that goes into processing your oil? Have you bothered to notice the dangers behind those pipes? Who breathes the smoke emitted from the towers you watch from the freeway? The brave, intelligent, skilled, hard-working, alert, on-task refinery workers, that’s who. You wouldn’t believe the types of things they go through every single day. The hazards in oil refineries should be completely eliminated. They are working way too hard and way too long in a day. Not only does all of this have a short-term effect on the workers, but a negative long-term effect to their health. They are spending a lot of precious time away from their families, and their lives are at stake! We must do everything in our power to do away with all dangers in oil plantations. Did you know that a refinery worker will work what’s called “seven twelve’s”? That’s twelve hours a day, seven days a week! With the amount of hard labor they must perform to keep the machines running, the heavy equipment they must wear and use, and the horrible air quality they must deal with every day, these hours are way too much! Have you ever heard the expression, “History repeats itself”? Well, back in the early 1800’s, the “Lowell Girls” worked in cotton plantations where dangerous machines and horrible air quality threatened their lives. These girls put their lives in danger just so they could get a little more money than some of the other destitute women. Strikes and trade unions formed to improve working conditions, and a woman named Sarah G. Bagley worked to lessen the hours from 12-14 to 10. Even ten was a lot! Here is a quote from one of the Lowell girls from The Diaries of the Lowell Girls: “We work for long hours all the time, and the machines are deafening. All the girls in my unit have the cough. One of the girls next to us died because her hair was not fastened, and was ripped from her scalp by the machine. Must the same rebellious behavior take place to ensure safety of the people in our modern-day plantations? Not only do the plantation workers have to endure hard-working, long hours for months at a time; creating muscle, bone, breathing, and other dangerous problems, but the refinery leaves permanent scars on its tenders. How so? The chemicals, gases, and smoke create horrible health hazards-resulting in early death. Cancers of the lungs, heart, and brain are just a few long-term effects. The same happened with the Lowell Girls. Our society is much better than it was in the 1800’s! To have the same dangerous working conditions is ridiculous! Our men and women do not deserve to suffer from cancers, lung problems, organ failure, and poisoning! Anyone who knows of these unethical conditions and doesn’t do everything in their power to improve them is sick! Our community must come together and put a stop to this nonsense and sickness. In addition, people’s lives are at stake! One wrong step, one wrong move, one inch too far, and they’re dead. For example, S2S monitors are required by anyone walking or working in an active unit. If somebody walks into a cloud of S2S, they drop dead on the spot. A monitor is even required so that when a certain chemical is detected, it will warn the others to get out of the area. Why? Once the chemical is detected, the person wearing the monitor is already considered dead. There are “watch men” required outside a building at all times so that if somebody drops inside, there will be someone who isn’t exposed to the source to warn everybody else. There are also “mile-highs” or the towers you see from the freeway that have only a ladder up the side to get up and down! Is this not dangerous? When a worker goes up, if he/she drops their hard-hat, the person below them is dead. Do you see the life-threatening conditions faced every day by our beloved family members? Lastly, there may be many safety precautions such as M.S.D.S.’s (Material safety data sheets) that explain the hazards in an area, how to avoid them, protect yourself, and responding procedures. '06 Tundra. My reverse lights turn on when I hit the brakes.? The problem is slightly compound. 1.First the trailer harness plug was hit by a rock and shorted out the fuse for the trailer assembly. I was in the dealership, the guy quoted me $338 for the plug assembly. 2. I replaced the fuse and this did not fix the problem for the reverse lights illuminating when I hit the brakes. The service guy said that there may be a neutral safety switch that is not working properly. Advice please.

In the novella, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck conveys the theme that achieving the American dream is ideally hopeless. In other words, this means that the characters dream of a better life, which they cannot achieve because circumstances have deprived their wishes. However, the book is about two migrant workers named George and Lennie search for work to attain their dream of owning a huge farm. In addition, they work so hard for their dream is because; George aspires for a freedom of working on his independent homestead and Lennie intends to own numerous soft animals to quench his fixation of soft objects. For example, when both men are warm around the campfire Lennie longs to hear about the rabbits and the land so George explains, " 'O.K. Someday-we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and-' 'An' live off the fatta the lan,' Lennie shouted. 'An' have rabbits.' " This quote means that they have their hearts set on owning the land with all the animals and food, especially Lennie's rabbits; also by living of the land they can live peacefully for the rest of their lives separated from the in hospitable world. Nevertheless, when they reach the ranch the dream seems closer to reality. Their hopes are drastically raised when Candy, the aged, one-handed ranch-hand, offers to pitch in with them so they can buy the farm by the end of the month. Candy latches on desperately to George's vision of owning a couple of acres with them because, so he can retire in peace. Yet, the American dream is prototypically as their dream. For instance, through their journey George is awaken by the impossibility of the dream because he knew they would never have the farm, yet only Lennie's childish personality kept the tiny light of hope alive. Their dream is not the only impossible one; Curley's wife who is a huge flirt had numerous desires to be in Hollywood. When she confided to Lennie about not liking Curley she says, " 'Couda been in the movies, an' had nice clothes-all them nice clothes like they wear. An' I coulda sat in them big hotels, an' had pitchers took of me. When they had them previews I coulda went to them.' " This particular quote means that even though after she resigned herself to a unfulfilling marriage she still had these fantasies of having beautiful clothes and going to major premieres. The author uses these characters to prove that by trying to accomplish the American dream in those circumstances are impossible, because they can only hope and dream for a better life. Furthermore, what makes all of these dreams typically American is that the dreamers wish for polished happiness and for the freedom to follow their own desires. sex offender shopping at a family store? i've been conflicted lately. i work at a small store that specializes in resdential swing sets for children. a few nights ago a man came in and i immediately got weird vibes from him. it was bothering me all week about the way he acted, so on a whim, i checked the local sex offender website. sure enough, the first face i see is his. i wasn't even surprised...my gut told me something was wrong. i'm not so worried about my safety, since he was convicted of assaulting a minor, but you never know. it just makes me angry and uncomfortable to remember how he paid an unusual amount of attention to the children that came into the store. he's only been in my mind lately because i was trying to follow up on a quote i wrote for him. but i don't feel like i can go on working with this particular customer. i spoke to my manager about it, but he just laughed at me. he said i can do whatever i want, but i'm making mountains out of mole hills. the man is listed as a level III sex offender and i think that's what's making me feel so uneasy. so my question is, would you continue working with this customer despite him being a level III sex offender? am i out of line deciding not to pursue this sale at all? i tend to give people the benefit of doubt, but my clients and their children also deserve to shop in a safe and comfortable setting. does this man deserve the same? thank you all for your suggestions. i agree that i walk a thin line here. if he is happily married with kids and really wants to buy a set, then i've lost a sale (which i can live with). but if i do sell to him, i'll always expect to open the paper to hear that he lured a victim in using our set. before i knew about his offenses, i left him a message letting him know about a great deal i could give him. i haven't heard back, so i think i'm just going to stop pursuing the sale. if he comes in and wants to buy, there's nothing i can do about it. like i said, i want to give people the benefit of the doubt, and maybe he is just a dad wanting to get a nice gift for his kids. i will talk to the owner of the store, since my manager (who is a father!) clearly doesn't understand my concerns. i want to believe that people can change, but i live in reality. thanks again for your comments.

Hedy Epstein: I have never felt such anger after what happened to me and the friend travelling with me at the Ben Gurion airport in January 2004... Hedy Epstein, is a German Jewish Holocaust survivor, born in 1924, whose parents were sent to Auschwitz in 1942, where they perished. In 1948, Hedy Epstein went to live in United States. In 2003, she decided to make a trip to Palestine. Shocked by the oppression that the Israeli government is imposing on the Palestinians, she is, since then, devoting herself to make it known to the world. In the interview she gave to the Swiss journalist Silvia Cattori, Hedy Epstein speaks, with her gentle and mild voice, about her last travel to Palestine after a moving visit to one of several concentration camps to which her parents were deported. And she said: "I would like to dedicate this interview to the children of Gaza, whose parents cannot protect them or send them away to safety as my parents did when they sent me to England in May 1939 on a Kindertransport" (1) While on the plane, still full of rage, I wrote on every page in the magazines provided by the airline "I am a Holocaust survivor and I will 'never again' return to Israel." I sometimes pressed so hard on the paper with my pen, that I tore the page. It was one small way to vent some of my anger. After I returned home, still very angry, traumatized, I decided to get some counselling, which helped me to work through my anger and allowed me to plan my next trip back to the West Bank just a few months later, in the summer of 2004. I have seen the long lines of Palestinians at the Bethlehem checkpoint. I spoke to a 41 year old man, who told me he works three days a week; in order to get to work on time, he gets up at 2:30 A.M. and arrives at the checkpoint at 3:15 A.M. to wait in line, a long line, with others, for the checkpoint to open around 5:30 A.M. He has to come this early because many people line up. Sometimes the Israeli soldiers allow no one to go through. He would like to work full time, but there are no jobs in Bethlehem. During each of my five visits I have spent some time in Jerusalem. I have been painfully aware how increasingly its current size and boundaries share very little with the city's historic parameters, Israeli only settlements, such as Har Homa and Gilo are referred to as Jerusalem neighbourhoods. East Jerusalem is dotted with Israeli flags flying from homes from which Palestinians were "removed," thus judaizing the area more and more. During my last visit, in August 2007, I only had time for a brief visit with my dear Palestinian friend, and her husband in Ramallah. During prior visits, I and some of my American travel companions were their houseguests for several days, basking in their hospitality, typical Palestinian hospitality, which is unlike any other I have ever experienced anywhere. The wife, ever cheerful in the past, seemed downcast, though she did not complain, simply stating "Life is more difficult since my husband is no longer working." In a conversation later, alone with her husband, he stated that he left his job in order to go to school and study. There is truth in both statements, but the husband's comments reflect an effort to salvage and maintain some of his dignity. I also visited and stayed overnight with my Palestinians friends and their children in Bethlehem. The TV, which is always on, at one point caught our attention. There was a story about Jews from all over the world, immigrating to Israel. There were many small Israeli flags waving and welcoming the new citizens of Israel arriving at the Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv. A big banner in the background spelled out in English and Hebrew "Welcome Home". As the story continued, we all stared at the TV, silently. Then one of us, I don't remember who, broke the heavy silence, asking no one in particular "What about the return of the Palestinians?" At the regular weekly non-violent demonstration in Bi'lin, as the teargas tossed at us by young Israeli soldiers, choking us, as we all ran to get away from it, I overheard a conversation between two Palestinian boys, one saying to the other "I don't want to die" "Nor do I" said the other. Their fear has stayed with me. What will happen to them? What is their future? And yet, despite the almost hopelessness of the situation that might never change, Palestinian people are amazingly strong. Even though the Israeli oppression goes on, and gets worse, with new types of military oppression, the Palestinians have not given up; they are going on living there. They are an amazing, resilient people. They will never give up. The Israeli may kill many of them, destroy their homes, destroy their lives, but they will never be able to destroy their hope for a different way of existence, for a better way of living together. No matter what the Israelis do, they cannot take away the hope and the dignity of the Palestinian people. The Israelis have the power, the Palestinian people have dignity and despite all odds, still have hope. The Israelis have the airplanes from which they drop bombs in Gaza, they have bulldozers made here in the United States, not far from my home, they can do all those things, but despite this imbalance of power, the Israelis will never be able to destroy Palestinians' hope and dignity.
Pool fence - installed aluminum is way too expensive. Safe and attractive cheaper alternative? I have a 2 y/o and a baby, so I really need a fence that is safe around the pool of the house we just bought. It's a 18x36 pool and the best quote for an aluminum fence installed I've found is $4,625. She also told me we can put up a 5ft chain link fence for $2,560, but that makes me nervous, even though she says it's up to pool code for safety, also I doubt it's pretty. I can't imagine spending a month's pay on something that's not aesthetically pleasing (chain link). I can't imagine spending almost two months pay on anything (aluminum). But I need to keep our children safe. Do you think we can install an aluminum fence ourselves? It's our first house, and we're smart people, but inexperienced in handy work. Would installing our own chain link fence be easier? Is there another alternative? I'm seeing different forms of safety fences around the internet, but nothing has a price, not sure if they'd be any more affordable than aluminum. I've seen safety covers rather than fences, but I'm feeling strongly that it would seriously deter us from using our pool if we had to uncover and cover it every time we wanted to use it. Christians and Tattoos? Read all before you answers Leviticus 19:28 teaches that “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I [am] the LORD.” But after reading up on theological research, I believe that this verse is looked at in the wrong prospective, though I’m still undecided on that. Here’s what I’ve read. Leviticus also says not to eat meat with blood in it, cut the hair on the sides of your head, or cut your beard…tell me now that everyone follows those rules! I’m obviously not saying that the bible is full of rules that don’t apply to us anymore…I’m just saying that some of the rules mentioned in the bible have either been made new by Jesus in the New Test, or that these rules were meant for the people in that time period for safety reasons. In Leviticus, people were told by God not to make cuttings in their flesh because during that time the risk of injury or death was almost a 100% thing. In today’s time, that risk has lowered drastically…though there are still risks involved. Leviticus 19:28 also says, “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead….” The theologians’ work that I’ve read also says that this part of the verse is looked at in the wrong way as well. They have found that people used to make cuts into their skin to respect the dead, in order to please the “gods” of those times. This today is looked at as a satanic ritual. Therefore, people now believe that tattooing in general is satanic and sinful…where in fact, it’s only sinful if it’s done to please other “gods.” (At least that was the view point of these theologians.) The bible also teaches that all we do is to be done for God’s glory. Another theologian and minister brought up the point that “getting a tattoo to glorify God is not wrong.” (there wasn’t much to that article besides just that point and quote) So…what’s your viewpoint on Christians and tattoos? I’m still undecided as to what I believe. It’s such a taboo subject and there is no definitive “black and white” answer. What do you believe? Thank you.
What are some good ideas for 4 t-shirts I'm making for a basketball game? Ok, so on Friday night, our school and our rival school is having a sectionals basketball game. Me and 3 of my other friends are going, and we want to make some cool t-shirts before the game. We were thinking about each having a letter on our shirts to spell out the name of our school, and then the letters of the rival school on our backs crossed out, for when they come onto the court or something. Does anyone have any other cool ideas or designs? And our school mascot is a cougar, our rivals is a panther. Pictures or quotes or just descriptions of designs would be awesome! Best way to find a reliable Chinese manufacturer? I'm a London based inventor, who has developed a new home safety product that I'd like to put into production. I've received a number of quotes for tooling from the UK, which are way beyond our budget, so I'm considering looking to the Far East. There seems to be so many options for finding a quality Chinese manufacturer and I've heard some horror stories about quality and delivery times. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
